Mongolians in traditional dress stand at the main entrance to Erdene Zuu Monastery, built using stones from the ruins of the ancient Mongol capital of Karakorum.  Karakorum was destroyed by Ming troops in the 14th century.  Erdene Zuu Monastery, part of the Orkhon Valley World Heritage Site, survived the Stalinist purges of the 20th century and is still an active Buddhist monastery.
